Sunset over vineyards and fields in the Romanian countryside

Cultural & Wine Tours

5–6 nights of castles, villages, local flavours and Romanian wine — at a relaxed pace.

For travellers who want history and flavour in equal measure. Five or six nights gives you room to properly explore fortified churches, medieval towns and Romanian vineyards, with long lunches and unhurried tastings built into the itinerary rather than squeezed in.

What this journey is about

History in the morning, a long lunch with local wine in the afternoon.

Five or six nights is enough to move beyond the well-known sights and into the villages, cellars and family-run vineyards that give Transylvania and Wallachia their character. Days are built around a handful of places rather than a long list, so you're not spending your trip in the car.

A typical itinerary mixes fortified Saxon churches and medieval towns with wine regions such as Dealu Mare, plus a morning in a working village to see daily life rather than a museum version of it. Tastings are unhurried, with time to talk to the people making the wine rather than simply pass through.

These journeys suit:

  • Travellers who'd rather understand a place than photograph it and move on
  • Couples or small groups with a shared interest in history and food
  • Anyone who enjoys a long lunch as much as a good view

Accommodation is chosen for character — boutique hotels, traditional guesthouses, the occasional historic property — and a bilingual guide travels with you throughout, whether you're in a small group or travelling privately.

What you can expect

What a cultural & wine tours journey feels like

  • Small groups

A maximum of 12 guests on group departures, or a private journey for your own party, so tastings and visits stay unrushed.

  • Local knowledge

Guides who understand the history behind each church and castle, and winemakers who talk you through what's in the glass.

  • Comfortable accommodation

Boutique hotels, traditional guesthouses and the occasional historic property, each chosen for character as much as comfort and location.

  • Carefully planned routes

Each day focuses on a handful of places rather than a long list, with realistic driving times built in between them.

  • Time to explore

Long lunches and unhurried tastings are built into the plan as standard, never squeezed between other stops on the way.

  • One point of contact

One person plans the balance of culture and wine with you from the start and stays available throughout your trip.

How we design these journeys

We build these trips around what's genuinely worth stopping for.

A cultural and wine tour is only as good as its balance, so we plan carefully between history, food and the vineyards themselves rather than treating any one as filler.

Principles we work to:

  • Fewer stops, chosen for what they add rather than to fill the day
  • Realistic driving times, with no long stretches on the road
  • A proper lunch or tasting built into most days, never rushed
  • Accommodation with character, close to what you've come to see
  • Free time between visits rather than a packed schedule
  • A bilingual guide throughout to add context, not just directions

Questions before you book

How do I book a trip?

Choose the tour that suits you and send your enquiry from its page, or use "Build your trip" for something tailor-made. We reply personally, usually with a few questions, then put together availability and next steps around your dates.

How does payment work?

A 30% deposit secures your place on a trip, with the balance due before departure. Payment details, deadlines and accepted methods are shown clearly on each tour, and we're always happy to talk you through them directly.

Can I pay in GBP or EUR?

Most of our tours are priced in GBP. Where a tour is priced in EUR, you can also pay in GBP, converted at our bank's exchange rate plus a small margin, which simply covers the currency risk on our side.

What's included in the price?

Every tour lists exactly what's included and what's not, under "What's included" and "What's not included" on its own page, so you know precisely what you're paying for before you book, with nothing hidden or assumed.

Who are the trips for?

All ages: young couples, families, multi-generational groups, and travellers who have time to travel differently. Every tour shows its pace, easy, moderate or active, so you can see straightaway whether it suits you and your travelling companions.

What if the group doesn't fill up?

Each small-group tour states its minimum group size and what happens if that number isn't reached. We'll always contact you well in advance if a departure needs to change, and we'll talk through your options together.
