Tasting at a family winery

Rolling vineyards and long lunches, close to the capital
Dealu Mare is Romania's best-known wine region, a line of south-facing hills not far from Bucharest where vines have been grown for centuries. It makes an easy, rewarding day away from the city, or a gentle first stop on a longer countryside trip.
Family-run wineries sit alongside larger, more established names here, and a visit usually means a walk through the vines, a tasting, and a long lunch that takes up most of the afternoon.
Dealu Mare is gentle countryside rather than dramatic scenery — long ridges of vines, farmhouses, and views that roll rather than rise. It has been wine country for a very long time, and the pace here matches that history: tastings are unhurried, lunches run long, and the afternoon slips by easily.
It suits travellers who want a proper break from the city without a long journey, or who simply enjoy good wine and good food shared at a relaxed table.

Any of them can be added to a private or tailor-made journey.

Dealu Mare is best known for red wine, particularly the native Fetească Neagră grape, alongside other Romanian and international varieties grown on its warm, south-facing slopes. Tastings are usually paired with local cheeses, cured meats and bread, and lunches often stretch into leisurely, multi-course affairs.
Winemaking on the Dealu Mare hills stretches back many centuries, helped by south-facing slopes that catch long hours of sun close to the Carpathian foothills. The region is particularly associated with Fetească Neagră, a native black grape variety that has become one of Romania's best-regarded reds, alongside other local and international varieties grown on the same hillsides. Small, family-run wineries sit near larger estates that trace their own history back generations, and many families here have grown grapes and made wine as a matter of course rather than as a business venture. Orthodox monasteries dotted through the surrounding countryside reflect the same long settlement of these hills, often standing close to vineyards that have supported local communities for as long as the churches themselves. Wine, food and faith have developed here alongside one another rather than separately.
Dealu Mare's landscape is gentle and agricultural: long ridges of vines running along south-facing slopes, with farmhouses and orchards filling the valleys between them. The hills roll rather than rise sharply, giving wide views across the vineyards from many of the higher points. Wildlife here is modest compared to the mountains further north, though birdlife is active around hedgerows and orchard edges, particularly in spring. Walking between vineyards on quiet farm lanes is easy and pleasant, with little steep ground to contend with. Harvest season in early autumn brings extra activity to the hillsides, while summer keeps the vines lush and green.

Dealu Mare can be visited comfortably for much of the year. Late spring and early autumn bring the most pleasant weather for walking among the vines, while the harvest period in early autumn adds extra activity to a winery visit. Summer is warm and green; winter is quieter but wineries still welcome visitors indoors.
A single day is enough for a satisfying visit, with time for two or three tastings and a long lunch. Dealu Mare works particularly well as a day trip from Bucharest, or as a relaxed final stop before flying home.

The region sits within easy driving distance of Bucharest, making it a natural extension of a city stay rather than a destination needing its own arrival point. No dedicated airport serves the area.
Roads between wineries are generally good and well signed, though rural lanes closer to individual estates can be narrower. A driver is worth arranging given the tastings involved along the way.
Walking between vineyard rows is generally flat and easy, though ground can be uneven after rain. Tell us about any mobility needs and we'll choose wineries and routes accordingly.
Dealu Mare suits most of the year, with late spring and early autumn offering the most comfortable walking weather. Summer is warm and green; winter is quieter but wineries still welcome visitors indoors.
A typical visit moves unhurriedly between two or three tastings and a long lunch, with plenty of time at each stop. There is little walking involved beyond a stroll through the vines.
