A horse and cart passing a wooden house in Bucovina

Slow Travel

Fewer places. More time. A gentler way to experience Romania.

For travellers who prefer depth to distance — fewer places, and proper time in each one. Rather than a packed itinerary, slow travel leaves room for a slower morning, a longer conversation and days that unfold rather than get scheduled.

What this journey is about

Fewer places, more time in each one.

Slow travel means choosing fewer stops and staying longer at each, rather than covering ground. Mornings aren't rushed — there's time for a proper breakfast, a walk before it gets warm, a conversation with whoever is running the guesthouse you're staying at. Instead of ticking off sights, you get to know a village, a valley or a region as something more than a stop on a route.

This style suits travellers who have already done the highlights on an earlier trip, or who simply prefer depth to distance — settling into a place, meeting people, letting a day unfold rather than scheduling it tightly.

Slow travel suits:

  • Returning visitors who want to go deeper rather than wider
  • Couples, families or small groups of friends who want the same freedom
  • Anyone who finds a long list of sights more tiring than enjoyable

Because it's built around fewer, longer stays, this format works best as a private journey — a private vehicle and driver, rather than a fixed group schedule, so you're never tied to someone else's pace.

What you can expect

What a slow travel journey feels like

  • Just your group

Slow travel runs as a private journey for your own party, so the pace is entirely set by you, not a group schedule.

  • Local knowledge

A guide who can arrange a quieter day as easily as a full one, and who knows a place well enough to let you linger.

  • Comfortable accommodation

Often rural guesthouses or family-run properties, chosen so a longer stay feels like a place to settle rather than pass through.

  • Carefully planned routes

Fewer stops and longer stays, so time between places is kept short and journeys never dominate the day.

  • Time to explore

Days are left deliberately open, with plenty of room for an unplanned walk, a long lunch or simply doing nothing.

  • One point of contact

One person plans the rhythm of the trip with you and stays available if you'd like to slow down or change plans.

Staying with a Maramureș family

Base yourself in a traditional guesthouse and spend unhurried time seeing how daily life and haymaking still carry on.

Cobbled street in the old town of Sibiu

A slower Transylvanian town

Several nights in Sibiu rather than a single afternoon, with time to know its streets beyond the main square.

Time in the Apuseni hills

Days spent walking and exploring the Apuseni Mountains at your own pace, without a schedule to keep to.

A boat loaded with hay on a lake in the Danube Delta

A quiet stay near the Danube Delta

Longer time by the water for boat trips and birdwatching, spread out rather than fitted into a single busy day.

A blue wooden cart in the snow in a Romanian village

Winter stillness in a mountain village

A slower few days in a snow-covered village, with time for walks and simple, unhurried mornings.

How we design these journeys

We plan around staying, not moving.

Slow travel only works if the itinerary resists the temptation to add one more stop, so we deliberately plan around fewer places and longer stays.

Principles we work to:

  • Longer stays over more destinations, usually several nights per base
  • A private vehicle and driver, so timings are never set by a group
  • Genuinely free days built in, with nothing scheduled
  • Rural or family-run accommodation suited to settling in, not just sleeping
  • Local introductions where they arise naturally, never staged
  • Flexibility to change plans once you're there, if you'd rather stay put

Private journeys or small groups, so you have time, space and real conversations along the way.

Places chosen for a reason

Boutique hotels, traditional guesthouses and historic homes. We choose them for their story and their comfort, never just for price.

Local guides who know the people

Guides who live where you travel and know the stories, the families and the best table in the village.

One team and one phone number, before you fly, while you travel and after you are home.

Questions before you book

How do I book a trip?

Choose the tour that suits you and send your enquiry from its page, or use "Build your trip" for something tailor-made. We reply personally, usually with a few questions, then put together availability and next steps around your dates.

How does payment work?

A 30% deposit secures your place on a trip, with the balance due before departure. Payment details, deadlines and accepted methods are shown clearly on each tour, and we're always happy to talk you through them directly.

Can I pay in GBP or EUR?

Most of our tours are priced in GBP. Where a tour is priced in EUR, you can also pay in GBP, converted at our bank's exchange rate plus a small margin, which simply covers the currency risk on our side.

What's included in the price?

Every tour lists exactly what's included and what's not, under "What's included" and "What's not included" on its own page, so you know precisely what you're paying for before you book, with nothing hidden or assumed.

Who are the trips for?

All ages: young couples, families, multi-generational groups, and travellers who have time to travel differently. Every tour shows its pace, easy, moderate or active, so you can see straightaway whether it suits you and your travelling companions.

What if the group doesn't fill up?

Each small-group tour states its minimum group size and what happens if that number isn't reached. We'll always contact you well in advance if a departure needs to change, and we'll talk through your options together.
