Grand Tours

7+ nights to experience Romania more deeply — from historic towns and mountain roads to villages, traditions and local food.

For travellers who have the time to see more than one region of Romania properly. A week or longer lets you move from Transylvania's castles to Bucovina's painted monasteries and Maramureș's villages, with two or three nights in each place rather than one.

What this journey is about

A week or more is where Romania really opens up.

Seven nights or longer gives a trip room to breathe. Rather than rushing between highlights, a grand tour lets each region settle — historic towns, mountain roads such as the Transfăgărășan, the painted monasteries of Bucovina, working villages in Maramureș — with two or three nights in a place before moving on.

This is the format for travellers who have time to travel differently: no fixed schedule to rush back to, and a genuine interest in seeing how one region connects to the next, not just visiting a list of separate stops.

Grand tours suit:

  • Travellers with a week or more free and no need to rush
  • Those wanting to understand how Romania's regions differ from one another
  • Small groups of friends, or couples wanting a fuller private journey

They run as a small-group departure (up to 12 guests) with fellow travellers, or as a private journey built entirely around your own pace, interests and dates, with a bilingual guide throughout.

What you can expect

What a grand tours journey feels like

  • Small groups

A maximum of 12 guests on group departures, so a longer journey still feels personal rather than like a coach tour.

  • Local knowledge

A guide who travels the full route with you, adding context to how each region fits into Romania's wider story.

  • Comfortable accommodation

Hand-picked hotels and guesthouses across every region, chosen so each stay feels like a proper base rather than a stopover.

  • Carefully planned routes

No more than three or four hours on the road in a single day, with regular stops and a plan B if the weather turns.

  • Time to explore

Two or three nights in most places, giving each region time to settle rather than being seen and left behind.

  • One point of contact

One person plans the whole route and stays reachable throughout a longer trip, so nothing falls through the cracks.

Moments you might live along the way

Examples only — every journey is shaped around your dates, pace and interests.

The Transfăgărășan road winding up the Făgăraș mountains

Driving the Transfăgărășan

One of Europe's great mountain roads, with stops for the views along the way rather than a rush to the other end.

Painted frescoes on the outside walls of Voroneț Monastery, Bucovina

The painted monasteries of Bucovina

A morning among the exterior frescoes of Bucovina's monasteries, still vivid after centuries, with a guide to explain their meaning.

Villagers making hay on a hillside in Maramureș

A working village in Maramureș

Time in a village where traditional haymaking and wooden architecture are still part of everyday life, not a display for visitors.

Painted blue wooden crosses of the Merry Cemetery, Săpânța

The Merry Cemetery at Săpânța

A visit to the colourfully carved crosses of Săpânța, a genuinely unusual piece of Maramureș tradition.

Traditional Maramureș folk dance in costume, by a wooden house

Folk dance in Maramureș

An evening with local traditions still very much alive, from music to dance, in one of Romania's most distinctive regions.

Pelicans flying low over the water in the Danube Delta

The Danube Delta by boat

A slower day exploring the channels and birdlife of the Delta, a striking contrast to the mountains earlier in the trip.

How we design these journeys

We plan the whole route before you ever leave home.

A longer trip needs a plan that holds together end to end, so we map the full route in advance rather than deciding the next stop as we go.

How we approach it:

  • Two or three nights per region, rather than one-night stopovers
  • No more than three or four hours' driving on any single day
  • Regular stops built into longer drives, not just fuel and toilet breaks
  • A realistic plan B in each region if the weather doesn't cooperate
  • Free time worked into most days, especially after a long drive
  • Accommodation confirmed and hand-picked in every region, before you travel

Questions before you book

How do I book a trip?

Choose the tour that suits you and send your enquiry from its page, or use "Build your trip" for something tailor-made. We reply personally, usually with a few questions, then put together availability and next steps around your dates.

How does payment work?

A 30% deposit secures your place on a trip, with the balance due before departure. Payment details, deadlines and accepted methods are shown clearly on each tour, and we're always happy to talk you through them directly.

Can I pay in GBP or EUR?

Most of our tours are priced in GBP. Where a tour is priced in EUR, you can also pay in GBP, converted at our bank's exchange rate plus a small margin, which simply covers the currency risk on our side.

What's included in the price?

Every tour lists exactly what's included and what's not, under "What's included" and "What's not included" on its own page, so you know precisely what you're paying for before you book, with nothing hidden or assumed.

Who are the trips for?

All ages: young couples, families, multi-generational groups, and travellers who have time to travel differently. Every tour shows its pace, easy, moderate or active, so you can see straightaway whether it suits you and your travelling companions.

What if the group doesn't fill up?

Each small-group tour states its minimum group size and what happens if that number isn't reached. We'll always contact you well in advance if a departure needs to change, and we'll talk through your options together.
