From the Carpathians to the Danube Delta, Romania blends dramatic landscapes, deep history and living traditions that are still relatively easy to explore without crowds.
Romania offers a rare combination of wild Carpathian landscapes, medieval towns and fortified churches, and villages where traditions are still part of everyday life rather than a performance. For UK travellers, it's an accessible European destination that still feels like a genuine discovery, with a huge amount packed into a relatively small country, and a warmth to the welcome that visitors often mention long after they get home.
The Carpathian Mountains curve through the centre of the country, framing everything from Transylvania's rolling hills to Bucovina's forested valleys. Roads like the Transfăgărășan and Transalpina climb through dramatic mountain scenery, with sweeping views and hairpin bends, while the Măgura hills offer a gentler, greener side of Transylvania, ideal for those who prefer their landscapes unhurried.
Transylvania's fortified towns, Brașov, Sighișoara and Sibiu among them, sit within walls and towers built to defend against centuries of invasion, and their old centres are still very much lived in today. Peleș Castle near Sinaia and Corvin Castle in Hunedoara are two of the country's most striking historic buildings, each with its own story to tell, and each worth the detour on its own.
In Maramureș, haymaking and wooden churches remain part of the rhythm of village life, and Săpânța's Merry Cemetery turns grief into colour and humour in a way found nowhere else. In Bucovina, painted monasteries such as Voroneț carry centuries of religious art on their outer walls, still cared for by the communities around them, and still used for worship rather than kept purely as museums.
Romanian food is built on honest, seasonal dishes, slow-cooked stews, fresh bread, garden vegetables and homemade preserves, often served with real hospitality rather than ceremony. Wine regions such as Dealu Mare produce reds and whites that rarely make it onto UK shelves, giving visitors a chance to taste something genuinely local, often alongside the people who make it.
Where the Danube meets the Black Sea, the Delta opens into a maze of channels, reed beds and wildlife, best explored slowly by boat. It's one of Europe's great wetlands, home to an extraordinary variety of birdlife, and a complete change of pace from the mountains and towns further north.
Many of Romania's most striking sights, from painted monasteries to mountain passes, are visited by far fewer people than comparable places elsewhere in Europe. That means more space to look around, fewer queues, and a sense of discovering somewhere rather than joining a crowd that's already found it.
Each season brings something different, from snow-covered villages in winter to vineyards heavy with grapes in autumn, and from spring wildflowers to long summer evenings. Our Romania travel guide covers what to expect and when to go, season by season.
Romania is a strong fit if you're drawn to culture, food, nature and slower, more thoughtful travel, and happy to mix towns, villages and countryside across a single trip. It's less suited to travellers who want a straightforward beach resort holiday, since that isn't really what Romania, or what we, are about. If that sounds like the kind of trip you enjoy, there's a lot here to explore.
