Travel at your pace: walking, driving, comfort and free time
Romania rewards travellers who like to take their time, but everyone has different questions about pace, comfort and what a day on the road actually involves. Here's an honest look at what to expect.
How much walking is there?
Most of our walking happens in old towns and historic centres, where cobbled streets and some gentle slopes are part of the charm rather than an obstacle. Visits to monasteries and fortified churches can involve steps, sometimes several flights, since many were built on raised ground for defence. The amount of walking varies a great deal from one day to the next, and from one region to another, so we don't give a single blanket answer. Instead, every tour page on our site shows a pace level, easy, moderate or active, so you can see roughly what a trip involves before you book, and ask us anything that isn't clear.
How long are the driving days?
We deliberately plan shorter drives with regular stops, rather than long stretches behind the wheel from one end of the country to the other. Mountain and village roads wind more than a map suggests, so journeys often take longer than the distance implies, and we build that into our planning rather than rushing between places. If you have particular limits on how long you're comfortable travelling in a day, whether that's an hour, two hours or more, tell us when you enquire and we'll shape the route around it.
Can I take it slowly?
Yes. On private and tailor-made trips, late starts and quieter mornings are entirely possible, and we can build in free time between visits so you're never rushing from one place to the next. Small-group departures follow a set itinerary shared with other guests, but there's still room within each day to sit, look around, have a coffee and let a place settle in before moving on.
What is the accommodation like?
We choose our hotels, boutique hotels and guesthouses with care, favouring places with character and a warm welcome over anonymous comfort. Single rooms are usually available on request, though a supplement may apply, so let us know when you enquire and we'll confirm what's available for your dates and route.
Are there stairs and lifts?
Some of the hotels and guesthouses we use are in older or traditional buildings, and not all of them have lifts, particularly in smaller towns and villages. If stairs are a concern for you, tell us when you book and we'll check the specifics for your accommodation and route, rather than leave it to chance.
What about meals and dietary needs?
Let us know about any dietary requirements in advance, whether that's an allergy, an intolerance or simply a preference, and we'll pass them on to the hotels and restaurants we work with. Our Build your trip form has fields for dietary needs, so you can flag anything important as soon as you start planning, and we'll follow up if we need more detail.
Can my partner come if they don't want to walk or hike?
Yes. Not everyone in a group wants to do every walk, and that's completely fine. A café stop, a shorter visit, or simply waiting nearby with a coffee and a view can often be arranged instead, so the two of you can travel together without either of you missing out.
Is there a guide with us, and what if I need help?
You'll have one point of contact throughout your trip, reachable by WhatsApp, so there's always someone to turn to if plans need to change or a question comes up along the way. Guides speak English and Romanian, and guides in French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Hungarian and other languages can be arranged on request, confirmed for your specific booking.
How big is the group?
Our small-group departures are capped at 12 guests, kept deliberately intimate so it never feels like a coach party moving through a place. If you'd rather travel privately, just the two of you or with family and friends, we can plan a private, tailor-made trip instead, built entirely around your own pace.
Luggage, weather and what to pack
Packing well makes a real difference to comfort on the road, especially if your route includes both cities and mountain villages. For seasonal advice on weather and what to bring, see our Romania travel guide.
Every trip is different, and the best way to plan yours around your own pace is simply to tell us what matters to you. Build your trip and mention any mobility needs or preferences as you go, or Contact us directly and we'll talk it through together.
