Sibiu Christmas market at night

Romania’s Christmas markets and winter traditions

Romanian festivals · 23 September 2026 · Romania Soul Tours

From Sibiu’s lights to village carols, a look at Romania’s Christmas markets and the traditions that surround them.

Step into a Transylvanian town square on a cold December evening, and you will usually find wooden stalls glowing under strings of lights, the smell of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts drifting across the cobbles, and somewhere nearby, the unmistakable sound of carollers moving from doorway to doorway. Romania takes its Christmas traditions seriously, and its markets have become genuinely worth planning a trip around.

The main markets

  • Sibiu consistently draws praise for its elegant main square, ringed by pastel Saxon townhouses, with an ice rink and a large, well-lit market that feels particularly atmospheric after dark.
  • Brașov combines its dramatic mountain backdrop with a lively market beneath the Council House tower — a favourite for visitors who want the market experience alongside easy access to nearby castles.
  • Bucharest hosts a large, family-friendly market in the city centre, with stalls, food, music and a generally festive, big-city energy.
  • Craiova offers a smaller, more local atmosphere, appealing to travellers who prefer to see how a regional Romanian city celebrates without the crowds of the bigger markets.

Dates for Christmas markets change every year and are usually somewhere between late November and late December, so we would always recommend checking the official local announcements closer to the time rather than relying on a fixed date.

Beyond the markets: village traditions

Away from the main squares, Romanian villages keep older winter customs alive that are well worth seeking out with a local guide. Carollers, known as colindători, go from house to house singing colinde — traditional carols — often in exchange for small treats, much as they have for generations. In some regions you may encounter costumed processions and folk customs tied to the winter solstice, which vary considerably from one region to another and are far more about community than performance.

A season of contrasts

Winter in Romania pairs well with its landscape: snow-dusted Saxon rooftops in Sibiu, frosted mountain views around Brașov, and market lights reflecting off cobbled streets after dark. It is a quieter, cosier side of the country compared with a summer visit, and one that rewards travellers happy to wrap up warm for an evening stroll between mulled wine stops.

Planning a winter trip

Because the exact market dates shift annually, a private, flexible itinerary makes far more sense than trying to time a fixed departure around an unconfirmed calendar. We keep an eye on when markets are expected to open and shape the route accordingly, so you see the towns at their festive best without the trip depending on guesswork.

How we help

A Romania Soul Tours winter trip typically threads together two or three market towns with the countryside in between, at a relaxed pace, with a driver-guide who can also point out the village customs a visitor would otherwise miss entirely. It is one of our favourite seasons to show people around, precisely because so much of it feels genuinely local rather than arranged for tourists.

Thinking about a festive trip to Romania? Build your trip and we will help time it around the markets, or check our events page for what is currently confirmed for the season.

Wrapped up warm, mug of mulled wine in hand, with carols drifting across a cobbled square — it is a version of Romania that surprises a great many first-time winter visitors, and stays with them long after the lights come down.
