A horse and cart passing a wooden house in Bucovina

Romania with children – and grandparents too

Family travel · 28 July 2026 · Romania Soul Tours

Castles that feel like real adventures, gentle village life and a pace that suits three generations travelling together.

There is a particular moment that tends to win families over: a horse-drawn cart trundling past on a village lane while a grandmother watches from her gate, and a child in the back seat suddenly forgets their tablet entirely. Romania has a habit of producing moments like that, and it is one of the reasons it works so well for family trips that span three generations.

Why it suits mixed ages

Romania’s appeal is not built around a single big attraction that only works for one age group. It is built around variety: real castles that children can explore and imagine as if they stepped out of a story, gentle countryside walks that grandparents can manage at their own pace, and villages where daily life is visible rather than staged for visitors. A hilltop fortress, a monastery courtyard, or a farmyard with animals can hold a seven-year-old’s attention just as easily as it holds an adult’s.

What makes the difference

  • A private driver-guide. Rather than a coach timetable, the day moves at the pace your family needs — an extra stop for an ice cream, a shorter walk if legs are tired, a later start after a long flight.
  • Comfortable, well-chosen places to stay. We favour guesthouses and small hotels with a warm, personal welcome rather than anonymous large hotels, which tends to matter more to grandparents and younger children alike.
  • Built-in flexibility. Multi-generational trips work best when the plan can bend. If one generation wants a lazy morning and another wants to see one more monastery, a private itinerary can simply absorb that.
  • Genuine, everyday sights. Children often remember the cart on the lane, the storks nesting on a chimney, or the sound of church bells far more vividly than the “main” attraction on the itinerary.

A sample shape families often like

Many families base themselves in Transylvania for several days — Brașov and its surrounding castles offer a good mix of history and open space to run around in — before adding a gentler day or two in the countryside, perhaps in Maramureș or the villages around Bucovina, where wooden churches and painted monasteries sit alongside ordinary rural life. Long single drives are kept to a minimum, with regular stops built in rather than treated as an afterthought.

A note on comfort

Romania’s distances can be longer than they first appear on a map, largely because of the mountains, so pacing matters more here than in a flat, compact country. We plan realistic driving days, factor in rest, and choose stops that give restless legs somewhere to stretch — a small detail that makes a noticeable difference when three generations are sharing a car.

How we help

Because every Romania Soul Tours trip is private and tailor-made, we build the pace around your family rather than fitting your family into a fixed schedule. Tell us the ages involved, how much walking feels comfortable, and what each generation is hoping for, and we will shape a route around it — with a driver-guide who genuinely enjoys having children and grandparents in the car.
