Sunset over vineyards and fields in the Romanian countryside

Romania in October: golden forests and harvest time

Seasons · 1 September 2026 · Romania Soul Tours

Golden beech forests, quiet mountain roads and harvest markets — why October is a favourite month for Romania.

There is a particular light that settles over the Carpathians in October — low, golden, and slightly hazy in the mornings — that makes even a routine drive through the mountains feel like something worth stopping the car for. It is one of our favourite months to be on the road in Romania, and travellers who visit then tend to agree.

Why October works so well

By October, the summer crowds have thinned, the heat has softened into crisp, comfortable days, and the countryside is at its most photogenic. Beech and oak forests across Transylvania and the Carpathians turn gold, copper and deep red, often at their peak through the month, and the mountain air carries a freshness that makes walking and sightseeing genuinely pleasant rather than tiring.

What is happening on the ground

October is harvest season across much of rural Romania. In villages you may see:

  • Apples, plums and grapes being gathered, often still by hand in smaller communities.
  • Pumpkins and squash piled at roadside stalls, alongside jars of honey, preserves and pickled vegetables.
  • The early stages of țuică and pălincă production — traditional fruit brandies distilled from the season’s plums — a genuinely local sight rather than anything staged for visitors.

Local markets in towns like Brașov, Sibiu and Sighișoara take on a particularly good atmosphere at this time of year, with autumn produce alongside the usual crafts and textiles.

Getting around

October is generally a comfortable month for driving, though it sits right at the edge of the season for higher mountain roads. The Transfăgărășan, for instance, is usually open roughly from July to October, depending entirely on snowfall, so an October trip that includes it should stay flexible about the exact route in case conditions close it earlier than expected. Lower routes through Transylvania, Maramureș and Bucovina are unaffected and offer some of the best fed views of the year.

What to pack and expect

Days are generally mild but can turn cool quickly, especially in the evenings and at altitude, so layers are more useful than a single heavy coat. Rain is possible, and mist can settle over valleys in the mornings before clearing — part of what gives October photographs their particular atmosphere.

Who tends to enjoy an October trip

Couples and photographers are drawn to the colours and quieter roads, while families often appreciate that popular sites are noticeably calmer than in peak summer. If you have visited Romania before in warmer months, October offers a genuinely different mood — the painted monasteries of Bucovina, in particular, look strikingly different framed by autumn colour.

How we plan around it

Because our trips are private and tailor-made, we build October itineraries with the season’s natural rhythm in mind — allowing time to stop at a roadside stall, wander a harvest market, or simply pull over where the light happens to be good that morning, rather than sticking to a rigid schedule that autumn does not really suit.

Fancy Romania at its most golden? Build your trip for an October itinerary, or see our tours for a sense of where an autumn trip usually leads.

If you have wondered whether the countryside really does turn as golden as the photographs suggest, October tends to be the month that settles the question — quietly, and without any need for exaggeration.
