Is Romania safe to visit?

Tips · 31 July 2026 · Romania Soul Tours

A balanced look at safety in Romania, from city streets to mountain roads, and the sensible precautions worth taking.

It is one of the first questions we hear from travellers who have never been to Romania before, often asked slightly apologetically, as if it might be an odd thing to bring up. It is not odd at all — it is a sensible question to ask about any destination, and it deserves a straightforward, balanced answer rather than either reassurance for its own sake or unnecessary alarm.

The short answer

Romania is generally considered a welcoming destination for international visitors, including couples, families and older travellers exploring at a relaxed pace. Towns like Brașov, Sibiu and Sighișoara see a steady flow of tourists, and most visits pass without any particular incident. That said, "generally safe" does not mean "nothing to think about," and the same everyday common sense you would use in any unfamiliar city applies here too.

In towns and cities

The precautions worth taking in Romanian cities are much the same as anywhere else in Europe: keep an eye on bags and pockets in busy areas such as train stations and markets, be a little more alert late at night in less-lit streets, and use official, clearly marked taxis rather than anyone who approaches you unprompted. None of this is specific to Romania — it is simply good practice for travel generally, and most visitors who follow it have an entirely uneventful trip.

On the roads

Where Romania asks for a bit more attention is behind the wheel. Roads can be demanding: mountain routes wind steeply with limited overtaking room, rural roads sometimes mix cars with slower farm traffic or animals, and driving styles can feel more assertive than visitors are used to at home. None of this makes the roads unsafe when approached carefully, but it is one very real reason many of our travellers prefer not to self-drive. Having a private driver-guide who knows the roads, the pace and the local habits takes that particular worry off the table entirely, which is exactly why it is such a core part of how we organise trips.

Health and practical matters

As with any international trip, it is worth arranging appropriate travel insurance, checking whether any vaccinations are recommended for your circumstances, and knowing where the nearest pharmacy or hospital is in each place you stay — details your driver-guide can always help with on the ground. Tap water is generally fine in cities, though many travellers prefer bottled water out of habit rather than necessity.

Where to get the official word

Because travel advice can change and depends partly on your own nationality and circumstances, we would always point UK travellers towards the official FCDO travel advice pages before booking or travelling, rather than relying solely on anecdotes from other tourists or on anything written here. It is the most reliable place to check for the latest guidance on entry requirements, local conditions and any specific areas of caution.

Our honest view

We have spent years organising private trips across Transylvania, Maramureș, Bucovina and beyond, for couples, families and multi-generational groups including grandparents and children, and the overwhelming majority of our travellers come away having felt entirely comfortable throughout. Romania does not require special heroics to visit safely — just the same ordinary awareness you would bring to any trip abroad, paired with a driver-guide who knows the roads and can quietly steer you away from anything not worth the bother.

If safety is on your mind, that is exactly the kind of thing to mention when you get in touch. Build your trip and tell us your questions and concerns, or browse our tours to see how a typical private itinerary is put together with comfort and peace of mind in view from the very first stop.
