Frequently asked questions
Everything travellers usually ask us before a journey to Romania. If your question isn't here, write to us — a real person answers every message.
Booking & Payment
How do I book a trip?
Choose the tour that suits you and send your enquiry from its page, or use "Build your trip" for something tailor-made. We reply personally, usually with a few questions, then put together availability and next steps around your dates.
How does payment work?
A 30% deposit secures your place on a trip, with the balance due before departure. Payment details, deadlines and accepted methods are shown clearly on each tour, and we're always happy to talk you through them directly.
Can I pay in GBP or EUR?
Most of our tours are priced in GBP. Where a tour is priced in EUR, you can also pay in GBP, converted at our bank's exchange rate plus a small margin, which simply covers the currency risk on our side.
What's included in the price?
Every tour lists exactly what's included and what's not, under "What's included" and "What's not included" on its own page, so you know precisely what you're paying for before you book, with nothing hidden or assumed.
Can I join a small group as a solo traveller?
Yes, many of our guests travel solo and join a small group. You'll travel alongside other guests with a shared itinerary and pace, and you'll still have the same one point of contact before and during the trip that every guest has.
How quickly do you reply to enquiries?
We aim to reply personally within one to two working days. Since it's a small team behind every reply, we'd rather take a little time to answer properly than send a generic response, especially for tailor-made or group enquiries.
About the trips
Who are the trips for?
All ages: young couples, families, multi-generational groups, and travellers who have time to travel differently. Every tour shows its pace, easy, moderate or active, so you can see straightaway whether it suits you and your travelling companions.
What if the group doesn't fill up?
Each small-group tour states its minimum group size and what happens if that number isn't reached. We'll always contact you well in advance if a departure needs to change, and we'll talk through your options together.
Can I book a private trip just for my group?
Yes. Use "Build your trip" and tell us what you'd like, your dates, interests and who's travelling. We'll come back with a personal proposal, shaped around your group rather than a fixed departure, at a pace that suits you.
Are you PTS/ATOL protected?
Financial protection depends on what you book and who provides it. Before you pay, we confirm in writing which protection applies to your booking, so please ask us if anything is unclear.
When is the best time to visit Romania?
Our favourite seasons are April–May, September–October and the Christmas season in November–December: quieter, greener or more festive, and more comfortable than peak summer. Summer suits the high mountain roads and the Danube Delta best, if you don't mind the heat.
How big are your groups?
Small, always. Our group journeys are capped at a maximum of 12 guests, so there's room for everyone to actually experience a place. Many of our journeys can also be arranged privately, just for you, your family or your friends.
What kind of accommodation do you use?
Boutique hotels, traditional guesthouses, rural family homes and a few historic properties. We choose each one ourselves, personally, for its comfort, its hosts and its location, never simply for price, and we stay in close contact with the people who run them.
Is the pace suitable for travellers over 60?
Yes. We keep drives short, build in free time every day, and show the walking level on every tour, so you know what to expect. Tell us about any mobility needs when you enquire, and we'll adapt the journey accordingly.
Who are your guides?
Local, English-speaking guides who live in the regions we visit. Guides in other languages, including French, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Hungarian, can be arranged and confirmed per booking. Nick looks after every journey personally, throughout.
About us
Who is behind Romania Soul Tours?
Romania Soul Tours is a small, family-run team led by Nick, whose own roots are in Câmpulung Muscel, near the Rucăr–Bran pass. His background spans travel agency work, hotels and hospitality across the UK, Romania, Malta, Greece, Croatia and Dubai, and he personally looks after every journey we run.
Do you only run tours in Romania?
Yes. Romania is the only country we operate tours in, and we've deliberately kept it that way. It lets us stay close to the ground, know our accommodation and guides personally, and focus on doing one country properly rather than many countries thinly.
Can you arrange a guide who speaks my language?
Often, yes. Alongside our English-speaking guides, we can arrange guides in French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Hungarian and other languages, confirmed per booking depending on availability. Let us know your preferred language when you enquire and we'll check what's possible.
Can you plan a trip for a family or three generations travelling together?
Yes, this is something we do regularly. Use "Build your trip" and tell us who's travelling and what matters to each generation, pace, interests, comfort, and we'll put together a journey that genuinely works for the whole family, not a compromise.
Do you organise group or incentive trips for companies?
Yes. We put together incentive and group travel for companies wanting to bring a team to Romania, built around your dates, budget and objectives. Get in touch with an outline of what you're after and we'll come back with a tailored proposal.
On the journey
What happens if I have mobility needs?
Tell us when you enquire, and we'll talk it through honestly. Every tour shows its walking level, and we can often adapt pacing, routes or accommodation to suit. We'd rather understand your needs upfront than have you find a journey doesn't fit.
Planning your trip
Do I need euros in Romania?
No. Romania's currency is the Romanian leu (RON), not the euro. Cards are widely accepted in towns and cities, but it is worth carrying some cash in lei for villages, markets and small guesthouses where card machines are less common.
What is the best month to visit Romania?
It depends what you want to see. Spring and autumn suit most first-time visitors with comfortable temperatures, summer is best for high mountain roads and the Danube Delta, and winter brings snow and Christmas markets but colder, quieter travel.
What should I wear to visit monasteries?
Modest dress is expected: shoulders and knees covered is the general rule for churches and monasteries. Some monasteries may lend a wrap skirt at the entrance if needed, but it is best to dress appropriately before you arrive.
Is English spoken in Romania?
English is widely spoken among younger people and throughout the tourism industry, though less so in rural villages. Our team speaks English and Romanian, and we can arrange guides in other languages such as French, Italian or Spanish on request.
How long is the flight from London to Bucharest?
Direct flights from the UK to Bucharest take around three hours. Several UK airports also fly to other Romanian cities. Romania is two hours ahead of the UK, so adjust your watch on arrival.
Do I need a plug adaptor in Romania?
Yes, if you are travelling from the UK. Romania uses type F/C sockets at 230V, the standard used across most of continental Europe, so UK visitors need a travel adaptor to charge devices and use appliances.
Is Romania expensive to visit?
Romania generally offers good value compared with Western Europe, particularly for food, drink and local experiences. Costs vary by region and travel style, so it is worth planning your trip around the experiences that matter most to you.
How many days do I need in Romania?
It depends on your interests, but many first-time visitors find a week to ten days enough to combine Transylvania's towns and castles with either the mountains, Bucovina's painted monasteries, or Maramureș, without feeling rushed.
